I WOULD like to comment on Margaret Watson's article of last week, 'Church demolition spoiled Easter for me'.
The church closed in June 2004 and not two years ago. The closure was due to a dwindling congregation and also the Disability Act of 2004.
This act meant we had to provide inside toilets to accommodate any disabled person, and this would prove too c
ostly.
Contrary to the opinion given by Margaret that the church was closed without any thought, a great deal of soul-searching was done by the congregation and stewards of the church. No-one wants to have their church closed, and a lot of people in Batley Carr said the same, but they never came through the doors!
You cannot keep any building going without money.
I see Margaret's point of the actual demolition being carried out on Good Friday, but, sadly it was only a building. If Margaret had come to our final service in June 2004 she would have seen a church packed with friends from the circuit and people who had travelled a long way just to be there, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
If this sight saddens Margaret, think what it does to me, as I live opposite, and have had to watch this unfold.
Times and values sadly change, and I can remember when there were no newspapers on Good Friday!
