LAST week you reported the support which Dewsbury funeral director Richard Box is giving to the commemoration next July of the medieval funeral procession of Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York 550 years after he was killed at the Battle of Wakefield.
Wakefield Historical Society is planning a nine-day programme, open to anyone interested, of visits to places of interest along the route of the procession, from Pontefract to Fotheringhay, walks along parts of the journey, and talks about the world Richard lived (and died) in as well as the nightly services of vespers in churches along the way.
Further information is available on the specially created website, www.richarddukeofyorkfuneral.org.uk or from Mrs Pam Judkins, 18 St John's Square, Wakefield. WF1 2RA.
I was myself fascinated to learn from Mr Box that vespers of the dead are still sung today in particular in high church or Roman Catholic places of worship when a body is taken to the church the evening before the funeral.
