We're from Dewsbury and we are proud
ANOTHER brilliant article from Margaret Watson ('The town that dare not speak its name', Reporter, April 11), it was apparent that she had put a great deal of thought into the article, which must have been very hard for her knowing how much she loves the town.
She is right about the people of the town being ashamed to admit that they live in Dewsbury and that drastic action is needed now to turn the events of the last few years and especially the last two months around. At the moment the whole country and the world think that Dewsbury is a destination to stay clear away from.
I agree whole-heartedly that Dewsbury is a special case and our MP Shahid Malik along with all ward councillors should be working together to put pressure on both the government and the cabinet to obtain as much help as possible for the town and yes if necessary cut through the red tape and bureaucracy. The town is on its knees.
Free car parking would be a start, helping businesses in the town as well as visitors. Car parking charges for Dewsbury are unfair when all surrounding towns and supermarkets are free of charge. Let's have a level playing field. Something we have been asking for for years.
But why stop there? As Margaret also stated quality shops are also urgently needed. Could something be done about reducing the business for new businesses? Or lowering the rents? At least until the regeneration programme is started. I am sure this would help enormously in encouraging new business into the town.
It will take time to rebuild the image of Dewsbury, but if everyone pulls together for the good of the town it can be done.
