HAVE local people noticed the flaws in the crackpot views of Godfrey Bloom MEP? (Letterbox, January 8).
Mr Bloom clearly thinks today's winter conditions invalidate the evidence of global warming. He seems unable to accept that the current cold snap is just that - a minor variation in the long-established pattern of our day-to-day weather.
The rapid melting of the arctic ice shows that global warming is a reality.
If that continues it may result in a flow of cold water into the North Atlantic Ocean.
The danger of this is that it could close off the flow of warm water from the Gulf of Mexico that keeps these islands relatively warm in winter.
That would result in much colder winters in Britain.
They would be more like those experienced today in north-east North America and north-east Asia where the sea freezes every year. in these circumstances, warmer conditions overall would make Britain freeze.
Global warming would bring other changes besides those in winter temperatures.
One of these could be the melting of all the world's ice. Amongst other effects that would put a depth of up to one hundred feet of salt water on the valley floor in Dewsbury and Mirfield. Fortunatley we still have the chance to prevent such drastic changes to our world if we are prepared to act.
No doubt Mr Bloom would argue that I am mistaken. If I am wrong, it does not really matter - life will contine with relatively little change. If, however, he is wrong the consequences for our children and grandchilren will be disastrous. That is why it is right to act on the evidence and the advice of the scientific community. The only questions would be whether the world's governmentsa re doing enough quickly enough and what contribution we can make as individual citizens.
