MORE than £1m is to be spent on strengthening a Ravensthorpe bridge after plans were approved by Kirklees Council.
The cabinet has agreed to the scheme to strengthen the Calder River Bridge. During the works, estimated to cost £1.3m, the bridge will be down to a single lane. One footway will also remain open for the work which is expected to last 28 weeks and will involve some night closures.

A second option considered by officers would have meant the bridge being closed for 16 weeks to allow for works to be done.

The bridge carries Ravensthorpe Road over the River Calder. The scheme is expected to begin in July with completion in January 2009.

The cabinet also approved a £425,000 scheme to resurface Bywell Road from Leeds Road to Lichfield Gardens. The work is due to begin on March 17 and run until the end of August.
