Historic buildings in Dewsbury and Mirfield are to benefit from a £2.16m lotto cash boost.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given £1,955,700 towards a scheme to regenerate the Northgate area of Dewsbury town centre.

The money will be ploughed into Dewsbury’s conservation area, which is listed on English Heritage’s At Risk register.

Work is expected to focus on Branch Road, Northgate, the Kingsway and Queensway arcades, and Grade-II listed Pioneer House.

Meanwhile, the St Mary’s Church in Mirfield will benefit from £207,700 to restore the Grade II-listed site.

The project will include repairs to the roof, pinnacles, ledges, decorative features and tower windows.

Work will also be undertaken to modernise the electrics and the pipe organ.
