A CHURCH was in full bloom at the weekend.
Visitors flocked to the four-day flower festival at All Saints' in Roberttown to see the fabulous arrangements on show, provided by Ruth Edwards' team of ladies from St Mary's Church in neighbouring Mirfield.

The theme of the festival was 'celebration' and organiser Angela Donovan said it seemed the perfect way to fundraise for the church.

"We wanted to celebrate the fact we have such a beautiful church in the village and the fact it is open for the wider community to enjoy as well," she said.

"We raised nearly £2,500 over the four days which is just incredible. We have never had a toilet so when we have raised enough we will be able to have that installed, as well as a new kitchen."

The Women's Institute, Roberttown, pre-school and pupils from Spen Valley Sports College presented their own arrangements, while year five children from Roberttown Junior and Infant School did a well dressing collage where they pressed leaves and flowers into the clay to form a picture of a bride and groom.

Lady Joan Shaw opened proceedings last Thursday and entertainment included a performance from the Roberttown School's music group, an evening concert on the Friday featuring organ music from Stephen Wright and Joan Mirfin and hymns from Julia Robinson, Helen Pitchforth and Kath Aveyard.

On Saturday evening revellers enjoyed a music from Reedifusion and Flutation from Cleckheaton Music Centre, with their leader Margaret Humphreys.

The weekend was rounded off on Sunday with strawberry teas and a songs of praise service. Sunday saw strawberry teas followed by a Songs of Praise with Stephen Wright again at the organ.

Angela added: "We could not have done it without people's kindness, help and generosity. Thank you to everyone involved."
