A TEAM of volunteers has travelled to a remote African island to help refurbish a hospital where one in five new babies dies.
The Rotary Club members took equipment worth £250,000, some donated by Dewsbury and District Hospital, to Ukerewe District Hospital in Nansio, Ukewere Island, Tanzania.

The island is a three-hour ferry journey from the nearest mainland town, Mwanza. Among the group were Mirfield Rotary president Gill Poole and members Adrian Lupton and John and Chris Philip.

They refurbished the operating theatre and maternity facilities. They also gave out 3,000 malaria nets and started a malaria prevention campaign.

President Gill said: "I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the task, but at the end of the project, amazed by the achievements made through teamwork, a concerted and concentrated effort from everyone and sheer hard work and dogged determination to make a difference.

"I feel assured that the people of Ukerewe will benefit from a healthier, cleaner environment and hopefully what we have done will have a knock-on effect on the mindset of the staff."
