Our pub to be proud of
A COUPLE who have taken over a Mirfield pub are hoping to make it a local that people can call their own.
Ann and Steve Emmett, who have taken over as managers of the Pear Tree pub, Huddersfield Road, say they are doing their best to give the people of Mirfield what they want from a local pub – and are putting their hearts and souls into it.
Ann said: "We are here to serve every customer's whim. We are putting everything we can into it.
"People have been coming in saying this is the place to eat in Mirfield, so that is looking really good."
Originally from Keighley, the couple have more than 50 years' experience in the pub trade between them and are looking forward to their newest challenge.
And the pair have big plans to help get the Pear Tree off the ground.
As well as introducing a new home-cooked menu, the pub now hosts a poker night on Wednesdays, quiz night on Thursdays and a jam session on Sundays. Everyone is welcome to any event.
Steve said: "Everything that's going on now we have started ourselves. Everybody can join in the jam night. It is open to everybody, any instrument, especially anything out of the ordinary. It's a nice easy session and they just sit down and play.
"The inside of the pub was refurbished 12 months ago and the ouside is going to be decorated – I am doing it myself. There is a downstairs bar that leads to the outdoor area, which is also being refurbished."
Ann and Steve are also planning a number of charity events, including an auction evening, a strongman event and a motorcycle challenge round Britain.
They plan to raise money for Kirkwood Hospice, Meningitis UK and cancer charity Christie's.
But above all, the couple want to make a pub Mirfield people can be proud of.
Ann added: "We want to create a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere in a safe place to be."
THE strongman event will take place on Sunday June 29, and will feature a car pull, barrel toss and tyre flip.
Proceeds will go to Kirkwood Hospice and fundraising for the Britain motorcycle challenge.
Anyone interested in taking part can contact the pub on 01924 493079.
