HIGH school bosses who fought to keep Castle Hall School open celebrated with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Castle Hall headteacher Andy Pugh, governor Bronwyn Bentall, Mirfield Free Grammar principal Lorraine Barker and governors' chairwoman Jennifer Ryan visited 10 Downing Street.

They were accompanied by Mirfield MP Shahid Malik after Mr Brown asked him to nominate people from his constituency who had campaigned against the odds for their community.

Mr Malik said: "When I was asked to invite community campaigners I knew from my intense work in Mirfield over 16 months that Castle Hall and MFG would be my undisputed first choice.

"Although there were only five of us congratulated by the Prime Minister we were there on behalf of the thousands who have given us unwavering support and helped ensure we got an outcome that many said was impossible."

Mr Malik also had special praise for Castle Hall chairman of governors Brian Nicholson.

Mr Pugh said: "It was a great experience being at Number 10, meeting the Prime Minister and touring the Palace of Westminster.

"Many thanks to Shahid for arranging the day and for the huge support he has given to us over the past 16 months."

Mrs Barker added: "Meeting the Prime Minister in recognition of our work on behalf of young people in the Mirfield area was fantastic."

Meanwhile, parent campaign group Retain Education At Castle Hall is holding a victory party tonight to celebrate winning its battle – and to help raise cash towards the group's £6,000 legal bill.

The ticket-only bash, open to over 18s, takes place in Castle Hall's main hall. Tickets are £5 available on the door.
