SAVILE Town post office has been saved from closure – but it could be at the cost of a neighbouring branch in Thornhill.
Savile Town was one of only two on the West Yorkshire proposed closures list which was saved from the axe.
On Tuesday, Post Office Ltd announced it was closing 61 branches in West Yorkshire, following a six-week public consultation.
The announcement sealed the fate of four post offices in Dewsbury and Mirfield: Staincliffe, Whitley, Hopton and Knowle. The first closures will be next month. But the company decided to save the Savile Town branch, citing the "diverse cultural and social factors within this community" and the ability of the staff to cater for non-English speaking customers.
It follows a massive campaign by locals, councillors and Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik to keep it open.
Sub-postmaster Abdul Patel said: "It's a real victory for local people and businesses."
However, there was bad news for Thornhill as Post Office Ltd is proposing to close Thornhill Edge Post Office on Edge Lane, instead. A six-week period of local public consultation will open shortly. The decision was criticised at Tuesday's Dewsbury Area Committee meeting.
Chairman Coun Salim Patel (Con, Dewsbury South) said: "I'm very pleased for Savile Town Post office but at the same time I'm really disappointed for Thornhill Post Office. It's in a very populated area."
And Coun Khizar Iqbal (Con, Dewsbury South) said he feared if the recent closures were an example, the consultation over Thornhill Edge was merely an exercise and its fate was already sealed.
He added: "What's the point of having a consultation when they're not listening to anybody? I think the decision has already been made – it's a foregone conclusion. It's my job as an elected member to challenge this and I will."
For full reaction to the news Thornhill Edge has been nominated for closure, see next week's Reporter.
