A SPECIAL event at Mirfield was certainly a talking point for scores of young people from Kirklees schools.
Around 90 pupils were at Mirfield Free Grammar on Friday for a Celebration of Languages day.

Founded by LEA languages advisor Peter Cummings, the event is now in its eighth year. This session was organised by Tina Newsome of MFG's foreign languages faculty. Other schools taking part were Heckmondwike Grammar, Community Science College in Thornhill, St John Fisher RC and All Saints' Catholic College.

It included a Spanish Mamma Mia, a French fashion show and 'France has Talent'. There were also workshops in Swahili, Thai, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Urdu, Swedish, German and Spanish.

Speakers included Simon Wilkins, a linguist who worked in the building trade in France; Ian Burn, a marketing manager; and Brigitte Heimrath, international area business manager for Camira Fabrics.

The event was opened by Kirklees mayor Coun Julie Stewart-Turner.

Miss Newsome said: "It was a phenomenal success. The young people were fantastic. Everything went to plan and they all did really well.

"We are now looking forward to next year's event."
