CONTROVERSIAL plans to knock down a church schoolroom and build an extension on the church building have been given the go-ahead.
Mirfield Trinity Methodist Church, Huddersfield Road, applied to Kirklees Council for the demolition and two-storey extension, play area and parking in June last year. Church trustees had already been given permission by Methodist Church heads to carry out the work but fundraising co-ordinator Christine Sykes said in November last year they were too scared to go ahead because they thought the council would not allow it.

But full permission has now been given, providing the church retains the character of the listed chapel, and ensures the free and safe use of the road outside.
