POLICE still don't know how Dewsbury tot Jasmine Bellfield met her death.
The two-and-half -year-old was found at her home in Naylor Court, Crackenedge, on Friday after concerned social workers rang police.
Officers spent an hour trying to get inside the house, and once in found the toddler dead. Her 29-year-old mother was led away.
Sonia Bellfield, who has a history of mental health problems, was held on suspicion of murder. Officers tried to quiz her but after three days said they'd been unable to question her and she was remanded to a secure psychiatric unit.
Distraught neighbours spoke of their shock and upset and flowers and cuddly toys soon began to pile up outside the house. There was talk that Mrs Bellfield feared social services were about to take Jasmine into care.
But Kirklees Council would not comment.
A close family member – who would not be named – told the Reporter Mrs Bellfield was the victim of a violent past and years of mental health problems.
The family member said: "She is a lovely girl. She has so much love to give. She cried out for love and affection. I am not surprised by what happened. I am just so sorry. "
Neighbour Helen Cocker was among the first to leave flowers and a giant cuddly toy outside the house.
Mrs Cocker said she realised something had happened when she saw the street filled with police cars.
She said: "I saw a paramedic with a defibrillator – she came out crying and shook her head. We knew something bad had happened.
"When I saw the police lead her away I said, 'Sonia, are you all right babe?' She just looked down and they got her in the car.
"It's just a tragedy it has ended like this."
A post-mortem examination was carried out on Jasmine but was inconclusive. Further forensic tests are being carried out.
