it will be an earlier-than-ever start for Mirfield Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal this year.

The 2011 campaign will get under way at Mirfield Show on Sunday. A range of fundraising events are planned throughout the rest of summer and autumn leading up to the town’s Remembrance Day parade on Sunday November 13.

Poppy officer Tim Wood said: “We’re only a small branch but we always punch above our weight, so because there aren’t as many of us we have to spread ourselves out over a longer time.

“We’ll be having a Junior Legion garden party in September, with the Red Barrows racing round the streets, then a concert later in the autumn.”

The Mirfield Remembrance Day parade is renowned as being one of the most impressive in northern England and, Mr Wood believes, the biggest in Yorkshire.
