Kirklees Council has announced budget proposals to close Westfields, where Children and Young People’s Services staff are based, to save £126,000.

Around 100 staff work at the building, pictured, but discussions are ongoing as to how many could move out of Mirfield. The proposal is part of a wider scheme looking at how council buildings are used. Staff could move into the town from other areas.

Coun Kath Taylor (Con, Mirfield) said: “If they are going to close Westfields then we are going to lose all that trade, because I know a lot of staff do a lot of shopping in the local shops.

“And its not just the people who work there. It’s the people who come and go that we will lose too.”

Martin Ibberson, who set up the My Mirfield shop loyalty card scheme, said: “We want people living and working in Mirfield. They are good for the town.

“People working here earn their wages and put something back in by spending their money in the town.”

Councillors will vote on the plans at a meeting on Wednesday February 22.
