THE first sweet pea festival in Mirfield has been given a cash boost from Mirfield Town Council.

The council’s finance and general purposes committee has agreed to grant festival organisers the Yorkshire Sweet Pea Society £500 to go towards the cost of the festival.

Each year the society, which is based in Mirfield, organises the Yorkshire Sweet Pea Championships and people come from all over the country to display their beautiful blooms in the competition.

This year the society plans to expand the competition into a festival, and everyone in Mirfield is invited to get involved.

Committee member Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton (Con, Mirfield) said: “The society asked us to help sponsor the event in Mirfield. We were very happy to do so and we hope it’s something that everyone in Mirfield can enjoy.”

The competition takes place at St Paul’s Church on Saturday July 2 from 10.30am to 4pm.
