TWO friends will retire in style after raising £1,365 for charity.

Purlwell Infant and Nursery School teacher Janet Astle and Ruth King, the school’s business manager, held a celebratory fundraiser to mark their departure.

Friends, family and colleagues joined the pair at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre in Cleckheaton for live music, pie and peas and a raffle, with prizes donated by businesses in Batley and their home towns of Cleckheaton and Mirfield.

Mrs King, who has been at the school for 22 years, said: “We decided instead of getting lots of presents we’d ask for donations to Breast Cancer Research.”

“Everyone has been so generous, we have been amazed,” added Mrs Astle.

Mrs Astle plans to return to the school, where she has worked for 13 years, to run its gardening club.

“The children are lovely here and we have very supportive parents,” she said.

Mrs King said she had firm friends at the school.

“It does have a family atmosphere,” she said.
