A plan has been hatched to get everyone in Kirklees into some form of physical activity by 2020.

Currently one in three people in the area do less than 30 minutes exercise per week and nearly two thirds of adults in Kirklees are overweight or obese. The Everybody Active plan is a combined effort between Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Sport, Kirklees Active Leisure, the University of Huddersfield and community organisations.

Cycling hero Brian Robinson, the first Brit to win a stage of the Tour de France, said being active was good for people in many ways . “It can help you stay healthy, energetic and independent as you get older, he said.

“It can provide a huge range of fun experiences, make you feel good, improve your health, offers a great way to relax and enjoy the company of friends while keeping you feeling young for longer!”

Phil Longworth, chairman of the Everybody Active in Kirklees board, said: “Our aspirations are high – we believe everyone should be able to access and enjoy the benefits of being active.”
