Thrilling regattas, spectacular dragon boat races and top athletes could soon be livening up Mirfield’s waterways.

Plans have been unveiled to transform a stretch of the Calder into a bustling base for a brand new watersports club.

Pennine Canoe and Rowing Club chairman David Jeffries brought councillors up to speed at a meeting this week.

He said: “The river is a lovely place. It’s a real facility that in this part of the world we have forgotten about.

“It’s something we could get a lot out of as a community.”

The club wants to put a jetty and clubhouse behind industrial units near the railway station car park.

It then hopes get people of all ages involved in watersports, and host events to bring hundreds of people to our town.
