BREAKING NEWS: Heavy rain sees flood alerts issued across North Kirklees

THE Environment Agency has issued flood alerts across Dewsbury, Batley and the Spen Valley as a result of today’s heavy rainfall.

The affected areas are the River Spen, Blacup Beck, Lands Beck and Canker Dyke in Cleckheaton and Liversedge, Spring Mill Beck, the River Calder and Chickenley Beck in Dewsbury and Batley Beck from Birstall to Dewsbury.

The agency warned river levels could rise quickly, as a result of heavy isolated downpours.

A spokesman said: “There is also the potential for some surface water flooding where water is unable to drain away.

“The Environment Agency will closely monitor the situation and are expecting to issue flood warnings.”

Flood alerts warn people to be prepared for the possiblilty of flooding. They are the first level in a three-stage warning system.
