Boxing star Evander Holyfield may have been an intimidating opponent in the boxing ring, but he revealed a more compassionate side to his character during a visit to Dewsbury.
The five time world heavyweight champion was in the town last Sunday to host a dinner and talk about his career at the Tetley’s Stadium.
Before joining hundreds of fans in the evening, he took time to visit the nearby Shaw Cross Community Church.
There he donated a van load of food to local projects as part of his work with the Global Village Champions Foundation.
He also took time to find out more about the work of One Community, a Reporter Series Fund charity.
Trustee Chris Battye said: “Evander likes to give something to the local community wherever he’s doing promotional events.
“He really wants to help people in the community. There was all sorts of stuff and he’s going to send another six deliveries during the year.”
The food will be shared by the Care Dewsbury and Trinity Care programmes which support homeless and vulnerable people in the town.
