Couple's fight to save high street

A CAMPAIGN to urge Mirfield people to support their local shops has kicked off.

The Buy Local campaign is being supported by independent town retailers and organisers Taxassist Accountants are hoping even more will get on board.

Owners David Cramp and Stephanie Harding, who live in Mirfield, set up the campaign in a bid to get people spending their hard-earned cash in local shops – and to help small businesses keep going through the recession.

Stephanie said: "We have seen two big challenges to the Mirfield high street since we've been here – anti-social behaviour and the credit crunch.

"Shops have closed but people keep opening them as well. There's obviously a will to keep this high street going. Clearly independent retailers must feel there's a market here and maybe what Mirfield needs to do is prove them right."

The couple set up their business in Mirfield five years ago and they moved to the town soon afterwards.

Their son Jake is a pupil at Crowlees School.

David said although the campaign was run by their business, they had a huge personal interest in it too.

Stephanie said: "We moved to Mirfield after we brought our business here because we thought Mirfield has a good high street and it's a good place to be. We want Mirfield to keep going – we want it to be a place our son can come and have a cup of coffee when he's 15."

The couple said shop owners had given good feedback about the campaign and were glad something was being done.

Stephanie said: "The response has been very positive. People have said it's a good idea. We've even had people putting our stickers in their cars and wanting to support the campaign that don't run small businesses."

David added: "This isn't just a campaign about supporting local shops in tough times, it's something we should be doing anyway."
