THE Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Calder.

The agency put out an alert for the river, which passes through Dewsbury and Mirfield, just after 8pm last night.

In an update this morning it said: “We are currently forecasting rainfall totals of between 40mm and 60mm and up to 50mm in places. This rainfall could cause surface water problems and river levels to rise.”

There are no flood warnings in place yet, but the agency expects to issue a number of warnings throughout the morning.

A flood alert means flooding is possible and people in those areas should be prepared, while a flood warning means flooding is expected and immediate action is required.

Arriva Yorkshire is reporting delays to services due to the weather.

National Rail is warning passengers about delays of up to 40 minutes between Leeds and Huddersfield because of a signalling failure at Batley.
