Plans to build more than 30 homes in Mirfield have been deferred – due to great crested newts.
Ben Bailey Homes wants to demolish a farmhouse and barn in Kitson Hill Road to build 34 new homes.
Objectors told Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee earlier today (Thursday) a pond on the site is inhabited by great crested newts, a protected species.
Applicant Tom Cook said two recent surveys found no evidence of newts at the site.
But a Kirklees Council Ecologist rebuffed Mr Cook’s findings, claiming the survey was held too early.
He said: “The report makes it clear that while the survey was held really early in the season, we also have the surveys to come in April and May. We really need that information.”
The committee members decided they could not make a decision without waiting for the results and a site visit.
