More than 800 runners made the dash from Dewsbury to Birstall and back during the annual Dewsbury 10k race on Sunday.

Runners from around the country took part in the race, which was back to its usual February date following last year’s March postponement due to bad weather.

Dan Garbutt, representing Durham City Harriers was the first over the line winning the men’s race in a time of 29 minutes 58 seconds. Sunderland Stroller’s Alyson Dixon was the first female over the line with a time of 34 minutes 5 seconds, the 22nd runner to finish overall.

Garbutt beat Holmfirth Harriers’ Mark Buckingham by 3 seconds to win and was followed by Alan Buckley, Andrew Ward, Mike Burrett, Gary Priestley, James Smith, Alasdair Russell, Iain Quinn and Tom Jenkins. The top ten all finished in under 33 minutes.

Women’s winner Alyson Dixon was followed by Julie Briscoe in second and Helen Singleton in third completing the women’s top 3 finishers.

The course started on Dewsbury Ring Road, before travelling along Bradford Road, through Batley town centre, up Birstall Smithies and then back to Dewsbury town centre.

The race, organised by Dewsbury Road Runners, was sponsored by Al-Murad Tiles and Disken & Co Solicitors.

Bernard Disken, race director for Dewsbury Road Runners said: “I’m pleased with how it went. The weather was OK, we had a bit of a windy morning but the number of runners was up on last year which is very good.

“Mark Buckingham led for a long way with about 40 metres to go but he was eventually caught by Dan Garbutt who won the race, it was very exciting.”
