“This is to ensure alcohol can be sold during trading hours”

Gomersal residents could soon have their first midnight alcohol supply.

The Co-op filling station in Oxford Road has been given the permission to sell alcohol until midnight every evening.

The decision was made at a licensing meeting at Dewsbury Town Hall last week, where representatives of the Co-op met the council licensing chiefs to put forward their case for an extention to the licence.

The previous licence to sell alcohol at the store was from 6am-11pm – but the new hours will cover from 5am until midnight.

Following the meeting, a spokesman for Co-operative Food initially said: “The opening hours at our store in Oxford Road currently remain the same.

“Our application to amend the premises licence by three hours will simply ensure that alcohol can be sold during all trading hours.”

However, the previous licence to sell alcohol was simply during the existing opening times for the store.

The spokesman later added: “I can confirm that we are currently reviewing the store’s opening hours, with the consideration of extending them.”

Speaking at the meeting, Coun Phil Scott supported the plans, but said: “I live next to a store that stays open until midnight – they get about four customers in the last hour of trading – I’m not convinced that the extra trade would cover their running costs, such as lighting and paying the staff.”
