The M1 motorway near Wakefield will be closed as works to upgrade the carriageway into a ‘smart motorway’ continue.

The Highways Agency is carrying out work to upgrade the stretch of road between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse to ease congestion.

The scheme, which is due to be completed by September, will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes during peak times.

As part of the works, the northbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 39 and 40 tonight and tomorrow (Tuesday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 15) and on Friday, April 17.

The southbound carriageway will also be closed between junctions 42 and 41 on Wednesday, April 15 and the northbound carriageway will also be closed on Thursday, April 16 between the same junctions.

All closures will be in place from 8pm until 6pm.
