Two men distracted an elderly woman before snatching cash from her home.

Police are appealing for information after the burglary on February 24 at around 2.30pm-2.45pm at a house in Chapel Avenue, Heckmondwike.

The men approached the victim’s home and knocked on the window to get her attention.

She opened the door and while one of the men distracted her by asking for a glass of water, the second asked to use the toilet.

While in the house, the woman’s wallet was removed from her coat and cash was snatched before the men left.

The suspects are described as white and aged 30 to 40. One was of slim build, 5ft 7in in height, with short black hair and clean shaven, and the second was of medium build, clean shaven and wearing a white T-shirt and jacket.

Both men are said not to have a local accent.

PC Tracy Boucher, of Kirklees CID, said: “We are asking members of the public who saw these two men or anyone acting suspiciously in the Heckmondwike area to contact the police and help us identify these suspects. Enquiries are ongoing.

“The elderly lady believes the men also approached her home last year asking if she wanted any gardening work doing.

“We are also reminding people to be vigilant and not to allow strangers into their homes. Always ask to see their identification badge and contact the company they claim to work for. If you’re not certain they are genuine then keep them out and contact the police.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kirklees CID via 101 quoting reference 13160082398 or call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
