Conservative councillor Jim Dodds will be the deputy mayor of Kirklees for the year 2015-2016.

Former army major Coun Dodds has been a Denby Dale councillor since 2004.

He said: “I want to support incoming mayor Paul Kane (Lab, Dewsbury East) in every way I can.

“I am really honoured to be selected, and I am very much looking forward to my year with Coun Kane and my year as mayor.”

Father-of-two Coun Dodds was born in Scotland and lives in Upper Cumberworth. He played a leading role in the transfer of Denby Dale library into community hands in a move supported and encourage by council leader David Sheard (Lab, Heckmondwike).

He will take office in May when Coun Kane becomes mayor of Kirklees. He will be supported by his wife, Carol, as deputy mayoress.
