MUSIC, merriment and two pairs of aching legs helped raise vital funds for three churches last Saturday.

Mirfield’s team parish held a family fun day and ceilidh at St Mary’s church, during which they welcomed back two cyclists from an epic sponsored ride.

Marathon men Chris Barker and Stephen Butler pedalled 130 miles in 12 hours, starting at Whitby and arriving back in Mirfield as the church bells rang out.

It was familiar ground for Chris, who walked the same route in 1982 and who was joined for part of the way by Stephen, then a member of Mirfield Scouts.

Chris said: “It looks like we’ll have raised £5,000, maybe more, when all the money’s in.”
