there was a surprise coincidence when Mirfield Angling Club’s newest trophy was presented on Sunday.

Richard Bonas was the first recipient of the Steve Jackson Memorial Trophy after a match on the Huddersfield Broad canal – and Steve’s widow, Janet, was there to hand it over only minutes after completing the Kirkees Race for Life on the next door playing fields.

It was an emotional moment when Janet presented the trophy, which commemorates a club founder member and former chairman who died in Kirkwood Hospice at the age of 51.

Club secretary Peter Dawson said: “It was sheer coincidence that Janet was running in the race right next to where the match was taking place.

“We only found out about it well after the programme for this season had been put together.

“However, it was very appropriate that Janet should be the one to present the trophy, after everything Steve did for the club over the years.”

The trophy will now be competed for annually.
