A special service at St Saviour’s marked the official opening of Batley’s new Windmill Church of England Primary School.
The Bishop of Leeds, Nicholas Baines, attended on Monday to give his blessing.
The Upper Batley Lane school, created by the merger of Brownhill Infants and Brownhill St Saviour’s Junior schools, will educate 420 pupils. The site has been open since April 1.
Headteacher Timothy Scargill said: “Our mission is to give the children choices. We want them to be inspired to go out and find things for themselves.
“The way that we’ve organised is such that there’s opportunity for children to follow their own interests.”
Year six pupils recited a specially-written school poem, and Kerenza Barton read a passage from the Bible.
“It is good that the Bishop could come and it shows his commitment,” Mr Scargill said.
