One of Earlsheaton’s best known residents was moved to tears when more than 150 guests greeted his arrival at a surprise party with a round of applause.
Joe Dyrlaga was joined by family and many of his friends for a celebration at Earlsheaton WMC on Saturday, the day before he turned 90.
“The whole village knew about it and everybody kept it quiet!” he said.
“When I walked in, Gawthorpe Brass Band struck up with Happy Birthday and everybody stood up.
“I was so touched.”
Guests included friends from Earlsheaton Age Concern 50 Plus, Earlsheaton History Group and Earlsheaton Bowling Club, of which Mr Dyrlaga is life president.
But the most popular guest was his new great-granddaughter Sienna.
Mr Dyrlaga thanked all his well wishers for their cards and gifts.
