A GROUP of volunteers got together to help clear up a busy public right of way.

Coun John Nottingham (Con, Mirfield) gathered together a band of helpers to clear up the towpath from Shepley Bridge Marina, Huddersfield Road, to the centre of Mirfield.

They included Mirfield MP Simon Reevell, community payback workers, and even a woman from Sowerby Bridge turned up to help after seeing it on the British Waterways website.

Equipment was provided by British Waterways.

Coun Nottingham said: “We passed a resolution three years ago to raise awareness of environmental issues and this was part of that.

“We had about eight to 10 volunteers and then the people from community payback came along. It was well worthwhile.

“There was not much litter, just a few cans and some bits of paper and things like that, but we had a good chat too - it was a nice social event.”
