MIRFIELD is set to take centre stage in a new political landscape.
There was jubilation in the town this week with the announcement that an electoral shake-up could see Mirfield as a parliamentary constituency in its own right with its own MP.
Mirfield could be the focal point of a constituency bearing its name and taking in areas from Batley, Spenborough, Dewsbury and Huddersfield. Already, local politicians are looking forward to better rail links to London with the constituency MP based in the town. Others predict a healthy boost for political competition with more parties vying for votes.
All see the change raising Mirfield’s profile like never before.
The seismic shift is heralded in proposals from the Boundary Commission, which is drawing up a new map of MPs’ constituencies in England.
Other parts of Kirklees have not fared so well. In Batley, for instance, voters will be represented by three different MPs.
Mirfield’s current Conservative MP, Simon Reevell, was tight-lipped on the proposals. His present Dewsbury and Mirfield seat would vanish, with Dewsbury carved up between Mirfield and a new Dewsbury and Wakefield West constituency.
“It would not be right for me, as an MP, to comment”, he said.
