LATE drama proved costly for Liversedge as they slipped to defeat at Armthorpe Welfare in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division last Saturday.

Liversedge had taken a 23rd minute lead when left back James Rothell ventured forward and produced a fine strike from just inside the penalty area.

However, the visitors were then guilty of missing a host of chances which could have given them a two-goal cushion.

Liversedge held onto their advantage until the game swung in the final 10 minutes.

Chris Hirst, who had earlier been booked, was judged to have handled a shot inside the penalty area and was shown a second yellow card and Steven Garner slotted home the resulting spot kick.

The 10-man visitors appeared to be holding out for a point but in the final minute Richard Smith bagged the winner which allowed Armthorpe to move away from the relegation zone.

Liversedge: Blythe, Butters, Rothell, Cooper (Hewitt 30), Hollinworth, Riordan, McMahon, Hirst, Bugg, Bojang, Jarrett.

n Liversedge Reserves earned an impressive 4-2 victory over Harrogate Railway in the Lancashire Reserve League last Saturday.

With Railway’s first team game postponed, former Sedge boss Billy Miller, assistant Lee Ashforth and Simon Wood took the opportunity to return to Clayborn to meet their old friends.

Both managers were reluctant to play due to the waterlogged pitch but the game went ahead and Liversedge took advantage to seal all three points.

Ben Grech-Brooksbank fired a brace and Nial Simpson was also among the scorers as Liversedge Reserves moved up to fourth in the table.

n Liversedge Under-19s were due to play Yorkshire Amateurs in the much delayed Northern Youth Alliance League Cup on Tuesday but the tie was postponed for a sixth time.
