Guests among the 500-strong crowd at Dewsbury Town Hall were full of praise for the talented young boxers.

Dewsbury’s British Champion Gary Sykes and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Qais Ashfaq both attended.

Labour Party parliamentary candidate Paula Sherriff handed out awards to KBW’s Kevin Pratt and opponent Steffan Baxter (pictured right).

Fiaz Rashid, of the Pakistan Kashmir Welfare Association, former rugby league player Dr Ikram Butt, Iqbal Bhana OBE of the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, Habib Khan (Islamic Relief UK) and Sajad Hussain (Seafresh) also enjoyed an excellent evening of amateur boxing.

The KBW boxing gym in Savile Town is fast becoming renowned for it’s investment and commitment in promoting boxing in the area.

KBW’s Shammy Cheema said: “We are committed to improving community cohesion and community relations through the sport of boxing, and encouraging a healthier lifestyle for the youth.

“Martin Bateson has played a pivotal role in the success of many talented boxers, including Team GB and future Olympic hopefuls Qais Ashfaq and Jack Bateson and KBW have built an accomplished team.”

Coach Martin Bateson added: “Boxing’s not as hard as it seems, many young people would like to try but are reluctant but my motto is ‘you walk through our doors and we’ll do the rest.”
