A feast of festive fun

A Christmas Cracker is a new venture for the Players, comprising a lively seasonal cabaret and mini pantomime all rolled into one.

This is the first time in their long history that they have staged a Christmas production and, most particularly, a panto.

However, always up for a challenge, the Players have decided to stage their own alternative pantomime Fuss in Boots. Set in a well known chemists in Pantoland the storyline involves a host of familiar characters who come in seeking remedies for their various ills. Amongst them are Tom Thumb who can’t stop growing, Cinderella with her aching feet due to glass slipper syndrome and Pitch Black (aka Snow White) and her gang of road-laying dwarves to name but a few.

The script for this mini pantomime has been specially written by member and secretary Rosemary Simpson.

“It’s really a tongue in cheek send up of all traditional pantomimes with stereotypical characters but still sticking to the traditional formula of panto,” she said.

“Although it is suitable for children I have tried to write it on two levels so that adults can have a good chuckle too.”

There will be plenty of singing and dancing with well known lively Christmas numbers and a special appearance of Cleckheaton’s West End Middle School choir in their third appearance alongside the Players.

The next few weeks are going to be a busy time for the Society as rehearsals for their main March musical production Me and My Girl will be starting shortly. A Christmas Cracker will be staged at The Comrades Club, Regent Street, Heckmondwike, on December 7-8. Tickets are £5 (£4 conc). Call 01924 492671 for details.
