Review: A rags to riches tale that warmed the heart

On a chilly Thursday night, Dewsbury Collegians brought joy, laughter and song to the stage with its retelling of a classic rags to riches story.

Dick Whittington was the choice for this year’s pantomime, the tale of a young man and his cat on a quest for fame and fortune in London.

A sprightly Natalie Jackson was excellent in the role of Dick, keeping the audience involved throughout.

The addition of love interest Alice (Hayley Thompson) and the hapless Jack (Rachel Warlop) made a charming trio.

The cast were in fine voice for the musical numbers and the dancers also impressed.

Jason Dykes was wonderfully camp as buxom Dame Sarah. Linden Barclay (the Emperor) and acrobatic Abigail Butterworth (Tommy the Cat) also gave performances well beyond their years.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the shouts of ‘he’s behind you’ couldn’t be heard in London too!
