Further Comet closures

A FURTHER 125 Comet stores will close after administrators failed to find a buyer for the business.

It is not yet known whether the Birstall store at junction 27 is affected as the locations of the stores set to close are yet to be announced.

Administrators Deloitte said the closing down process will take place over the coming weeks, leaving around 70 stores in the business.

These branches of the electricals chain will remain open until all remaining stock is sold.

Business departments in Rickmansworth, Hull and Clevedon will be further reduced at the same time, while the Harlow distribution centre has been closed.

Joint administrator Chris Farrington said: “We remain in discussions with a small number of interested parties and hope that a positive outcome can still be achieved.

“Should any acceptable offers be received for stores we will delay the closure process. Unfortunately, in the absence of a firm offer for the whole of the business, it has become necessary to begin making plans in case a sale is not concluded.

“If a sale is not possible we would envisage stores to begin closing in December.”
