Journal shares diabesity work

Dr Chinnadorai Rajeswaran, a consultant at Dewsbury and District Hospital, is chairman of the National Diabesity Forum and editor-in-chief of its new Diabesity in Practice journal.

The quarterly peer-reviewed publication brings together the latest research and best practice from the UK and overseas.

Dr Rajeswaran said: “Everybody wants to know about it because it’s very topical.

“The number of people with obesity is going up so the number of people with type 2 diabetes is also going up. It’s about how we manage that.”

Aimed at health professionals, the free journal is available both in print and online. The first copies were handed out last month during the Diabetes UK conference in Glasgow where Dr Rajeswaran was a speaker.

He said: “The basic aim is to provide knowledge to doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, to make them aware of the latest developments and how to manage people with diabetes and obesity.

“It’s a very comprehensive journal on this topic. There’s nothing else like this and the feedback has been excellent.”

Dr Rajeswaran said some people were sceptical when he first had the idea for the journal two years ago.

“People think that Dewsbury is a very small town and we can’t do things on a national scale, but we can,” he said.

“People laughed and said how could I do a national journal, but it’s here and a lot of people want to support it.”

He said colleagues at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, particularly post-graduate medical director Dr Andrew Jackson and clinical chairman of medicine Dr Richard Jenkins, had been very supportive.

He added: “We’ve got an excellent weight management service. I get lots of calls from doctors and nurses around the country who want to do the same.”
