A Dewsbury schoolboy will cycle over 130 miles across the breadth of the country to support a cause close to his heart.

Timothy Lane, 11, is attempting the Coast to Coast challenge by riding from Workington on the edge of the Irish Sea all the way to the North Sea coast at Sunderland.

The Heckmondwike Grammar School pupil aims to raise £500 towards the voluntary work of a local nurse who is currently overseeing a health project in Swaziland.

Timothy, his parents David and Elaine and brother Jonathan are all planning to visit the African country, where former Dewsbury cardiac sister Clair Oates is responsible for the children’s health team for Challenge Ministries (Elim Missions).

The youngster, who rides with Kirklees Cycling Academy and Ravensthorpe Cycling Club, will climb 3,000 metres during his cross-Pennine odyssey, which he expects to complete in two and a half days.

He has been clocking up over 100 miles a week during training rides.

Clair is volunteering at Hawane Farm, where she teaches families about hygiene, nutrition, emotional health and exercise, first aid, HIV/AIDS and TB prevention and issues around abuse.

“The health team often find there is little understanding of the difference between a minor illness and a life threatening one, which can often result in people seeking help too late and consequently dying of illnesses that could otherwise have been treated,” explained dad David.

Timothy will be supported on the ride by David and family friend Ron Jones, who are funding the trip themselves.

He will begin his challenge on May 31 from Workington, with a stop-off at picturesque Keswick in the Lake District,.

The next day he will then begin covering the 45 miles from Penrith to Alston, the steepest stretch.

On the Thursday he will rack up 55 miles, climbing peaks including Crawleyside before entering County Durham, passing through Consett and arriving at his finish point in Sunderland.
