The Heavy Woollen branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has awarded its club of the year award to The Hanging Heaton Cricket Club on Bennetts Lane.

The certificate was presented by branch chairman Andy Kassube to club stewards Joanne and Peter in front of a packed club.

Since the couple took over in 2012, sales have risen by over 40 per cent such is the popularity amongst locals.

When Peter took over the club there was just one hand-pulled ale on offer.

However, he persisted with trying new ideas and is now selling over 13 casks a week on average.

There are three real ales available on the bar, which are a mixture of local brews and beers that Peter sources from other areas.

The club has now over 300 members from not only the cricket club but also the snooker and bowls areas.
