AFTER an absence of nearly 40 years the Dewsbury Rockers bikers are getting their motors running and hitting the highway – all the way to Scarborough.
Originally the Cleckheaton Crew, the riders met regularly at the Brazilia coffee bar in Spen during the Sixties and Seventies, before moving onto the BonBon cafe in Dewsbury bus station – where they became the Dewsbury Rockers.
They would get together regularly to plan their next bike run.
The members lost touch in the mid-Seventies until their first reunion in 1993, prior to the death of founding member Gordon Webster, and have stayed together ever since.
Now they meet every Wednesday at the California pub, Gomersal, and regularly have between 15-25 members turning up.
Over the past few years the members have gone on numerous trips including rides to Whitby Bay, the Lake District and a memorable 40 bike ride to Aces Cafe, in London.
However, Scarborough has always been a favourite – especially parking up outside the famous Jaconelli's Ice Cream shop.
John Halmshaw, one of the organisers of the latest reunion, is hoping that this year's meet will trump previous get-togethers.
"We're all hoping as many people as possible make the trip so that it's a memorable event.
"We hope to carry on doing the runs for quite a few years to come, but you never know," he said.
"With this run being the 40th anniversary, it's important to make it the best we've ever had.
"We want everyone who was involved back then to get in touch and come along."
The bikers will be meeting on Sunday September 6 at the Craft Centre, at Spittal Farm, near Staxton, before setting off on the A64 towards Scarborough at around 1pm in convoy.
John added: "In 1969, the majority of us had British bikes like AJS, BSAs and triumphs but now there are so many different types.
"Some of us have Harley Davidsons, Yamahas, Hondas but there are still some of us on the new Triumphs.
"We're all really looking forward to getting out on them and making the trip to the coast."
