Call to make Lions Club roar

That’s something Andrew Hamilton wants to change.

The 72-year-old lived in Dewsbury and Mirfield for more than 20 years. He then moved down to Milton Keynes, where he became heavily involved with the local Lions Club.

Volunteer-led Lions Clubs support worthy local causes by holding fundraising events.

Morley and Huddersfield have clubs, but Dewsbury and the surrounding district has not had one for around 20 years.

Now he’s back in Dewsbury and wants to establish a Dewsbury and Spen Valley club, which would also encompass Batley, Birstall and Mirfield.

“There are Lions Clubs everywhere,” said former teacher Mr Hamilton. “China, just wherever you go – but not in Dewsbury.

“We tend not to shout much about ourselves in Lions Clubs, but we should get one going here.”

Mr Hamilton is asking interested parties to attend Heckmondwike Salvation Army’s family fun day in Barrack Street on Saturday, 11am-3pm.

He and visiting Lions will have a table there and would like to talk to potential members and groups who may want to call upon the club in the future.

The new club would need around 20 committed members to be granted a charter by Lions Clubs International, Mr Hamilton added.

His previous club offer free access to disabled scooters and helped a young single mum who’s daughter had died by paying for her gravestone.

“This is just a flavour of what local clubs can do and how I envisage the new club helping in the community,” Mr Hamilton added.
