Choir is on song at fundraising concert

A community choir hit the high notes during a performance for charity at a church.

Members of Oakenshaw Community Choir took centre stage for a concert at Morley Central Methodist Church on Saturday, March 5.

They were raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind, which supports blind or partially sighted people.

The performance was organised by the church as part of a series of fundraisers this year.

Linda Hopkinson, from Oakenshaw Community Choir, said: “ Despite the bitter cold weather and all the coughs and colds of the season there was good turnout of both choir members and audience and the choir was in full voice.

“There was a very warm welcome from the members of the church and we were proud to be part of their fund raising event.”

The 30-strong choir performed a range of songs from different eras, genres, languages and cultures.

Their concert included renditions of You Raise Me Up, Bridge of Troubled Water and Zimbabwean folk song Shosholoza.

Linda added: “A great social occasion in aid of an excellent cause and with loads of enjoyment for everyone.

“It is said that singing lifts the soul and it certainly did as we all left for home buzzing and ready to sing some more!”

The choir is run by volunteers and is currently looking for new members to join its ranks.

An audition is not required to join and choir hopefuls do not need to have any prior singing experience.

Organisers are looking to boost its numbers of male members in particular.

The choir performs a wide range of songs from all genres.

They meet on Monday evenings, from 8pm-9.30pm during school term time at St Andrew’s Church, Bradford Road, Oakenshaw.

Guide Dogs For the Blind provides support for thousands of blind and partially sighted people across the UK.
