Church gets grant towards WWI window

Ebenezer Methodist Church in Hanging Heaton asked for £25,600 from Dewsbury and Mirfield District Committee.

But at the latest meeting on Tuesday night, it was agreed that the church in High Street would get only £4,600.

The capital grant will go to replacing the rotting frames and restoring the stained glass feature which was installed in 1922.

Meeting co-ordinator Jackie Ingham said: “It’s a considerable capital sum.

“We extend to the group that there’s not that much available for the committee to give.”

Coun Eric Firth (Lab, Dews East) said: “Nevertheless, it’s quite fitting.

“It’s 100 years since the start of the war and it’s well worthy of support.

“The church are actively fundraising, so anything you can give will be appreciated.”

Dewsbury East councillors were asked if they wished to contribute £2,930.45 of their own ward budget as part of the £4,600 total and accepted – even though it leaves them with a negative balance.
