Community auction has lots of interest

A community of monks has once again caught auction fever as it prepares for what is becoming one of its showpiece events.

After the success of 2012’s fundraising auction, the Community of the Resurrection, off Stocks Bank Road, is holding another to raise money for its ambitious improvements.

The star lot is a silver cup, made by the Royal goldsmiths in 1803, which is expected to fetch upwards of £5,000. There will also be an Indian cavalry sword from the Raj era, and a bible from 1637.

The community wants to bring its old quarry theatre back into use, and plans to give the overgrown site a £500,000 kiss-of-life to once again stage plays and concerts.

Auction organiser Father John Gribben is hopeful the auction can make a big contribution to this year’s plans.

He said: “We hope to raise at least £12,000 – the last two auctions we held raised more than £60,000 each, so we are really looking forward to it.

“We are very grateful to all our supporters who have donated items to date. We have an eclectic mix with several items of local interest but I’m still looking for much more to make the day a real success.”

The auction will take place at the Community of the Resurrection on Saturday March 29 at 2pm, with opportunities to view the items on Friday, March 28.
