Council begins action over “trespassing” travellers

Travellers camped behind the old Maccess building could soon be moved after Kirklees Council started legal proceedings.

It is the latest move in a cat and mouse battle between the local authority and the travelling band, who recently moved off land on New North Road in Heckmondwike just hours before an eviction notice was due to expire before pitching up at the old office block in Gomersal.

A spokesperson for the council said: “The council has begun proceedings for the encampment at Shirley Avenue, Gomersal.

“Unauthorised encampments are always prioritised to minimise any impact on communities and where possible the council takes steps to improve security to stop any further trespass.”
